Anniversary: Cathedral Cornerstone: June 2, 1907

Here’s a reflection on that event from the Pioneer Press: May 30, 2007, leading up to Cornerstone Centennial:

“The 1907 event was quite the civic party, drawing more than 30,000 Minnesotans, who marched from the Capitol to the cathedral site on St. Anthony Hill, where 60,000 gathered to watch John Ireland conduct cornerstone ceremonies. Ireland, the first archbishop of St. Paul and a national figure in the American church and national politics recognized the importance of the building not only to the Catholic community but to the wider public. “There should be no one who, entering the cathedral, is not able to say … ‘It is mine,’ ” the archbishop said at the time.”
